Review - Police Cops in Space

Underbelly Festival

Playing until 18th August 2024

Review {AD-PR Gifted}

Police Cops in Space is a highly entertaining comedy that skilfully blends 80s nostalgia with a unique sense of humour. Performed by the talented trio of Zachary Hunt, Nathan Parkinson, and Tom Roe, the show is a brilliant display of physical comedy and improvisation.

The story follows Sammy Johnson, the last Police Cop in the universe, on his quest to avenge his father's death at the hands of an evil robot. Accompanied by his companions, Alien fighter pilot Ranger and Cyborg C9, Sammy faces a series of absurd and hilarious challenges.

One of the most impressive aspects of Police Cops in Space is its inventive use of props and lighting. Despite a minimalistic set, the show creates a vivid and engaging world through simple yet creative means. From LED-lit skipping ropes representing space travel, to glow sticks mimicking futuristic bikes, the ingenuity on display is remarkable.

The humour is a delightful mix of puns and unexpected jokes, all delivered at a rapid pace. The trio's ability to switch characters seamlessly adds to the chaotic energy of the performance, keeping the audience engaged and laughing throughout. The show also features some excellent verbal gags, including a particularly surreal joke about foot measuring machines.

Music plays a significant role in the show, with tracks from Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, and even a ballet set to Bob Dylan's "Sign On The Window" adding to the eclectic and unpredictable nature of the performance. These musical interludes, combined with dance breaks and slow-motion fight sequences, showcase the performers' versatility and commitment to their craft.

Although the show debuted in 2017, it still feels fresh and spontaneous, thanks to the performers' willingness to improvise and adapt to the moment. This was evident during the performance at the Underbelly Festival, where the trio incorporated references to a thunderstorm raging outside the venue, much to the audience's amusement.

While Police Cops in Space is undeniably fun and inventive, there are moments where the rapid-fire humour can feel a bit overwhelming, and some jokes may not land as well as others. However, these minor drawbacks do little to detract from the overall enjoyment of the show.

This is a must-see for fans of offbeat comedy and 80s nostalgia. Its blend of inventive props, humour, and energetic performances make for an unforgettable experience. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the Police Cops universe, this show is sure to leave you laughing and wanting more.
